Dreaming of Fall, Y'all

It’s still 100 degrees and I would probably sell my soul for weeks of sustained sweater weather.

fall-y'all

We had a lovely little week in August where it was rainy and in the 70s/80s, but I knew (I knew!) that it was just a cruel, cruel tease. We’ll have another month—at least—of me scheming to find places to work that have parking garages so I don’t have to face the wrath of a hot seatbelt buckle. Another month of “dewy” complexions and sweaty ponytails and topknots. And with the State Fair of Texas, there’s usually another sunburn coming my way, even though I’m obsessive about SPF.

Honestly, I don’t remember wearing anything more than a light jacket or sweater all last winter. I’m not saying I want a repeat of the snowpocalypse like we had when Dallas hosted the Super Bowl that year, but I really would like to have a nice, crisp autumn in North Texas. Is that too much to ask?

Probably.

The good news is, I won a week in the mountains last year’s Buns and Roses silent auction, so in September, I’m packing up the Jeep with tons of sweaters and hot tea options, Max the 16 ½ year old poodle, and my mom, and we are going to be gloriously chilly for seven whole days and nights. (More if you count going to Denver for a few days before so we can acclimate to the altitude before climbing up to 10,000 feet!)

I’m planning to do nothing but read on the porch and/or by the fire—okay, I’ll be working too, but that’s not a hardship—and totally unplug from the world. Doesn’t that sound like an absolute dream? (Although, you know me, I'll probably post to Insta.)

But even that will be fleeting as I’ll be spending the last week in September in Houston (aka the armpit of the world…sorry, H-town peeps) where it will probably still be 90 degrees and 80 percent humidity. But I’ll be at the Romance Mastermind with a bunch of brilliant romance writers chilling out at the Four Seasons (wahoo!), so don’t feel too sorry for me.

I cannot wait for the crop of 2018 holiday romances to come out, but until then, these are a few new releases I have on my radar for Fall 2018. Click on the cover to add them to your pre-orders...

Let’s compare notes. What’s on your list?

Psssst…don’t forget that Lindsay Emory and I host #ReadWritePlan in September for romance readers and writers…or readers and writers in general. It’s always a lot of fun to peek inside someone else’s planner and get new ideas. I’d love for you to join us.

Five for Friday: Q4 Full Speed Ahead Edition

If you've been thinking 2017 is a pretty spectacularly crappy year, take heart: it's almost over. Say what? Yep, you read that right. Quarter Four Approacheth.

I did my Q4 re-prioritizing yesterday, and it was just what the doctor ordered. (I shared a little bit about it as part of my #ReadWritePlan post on Instagram.) Especially since I was just coming off some away time in the mountains, it was the perfect time to reflect and reassess.

Last week saw me at the WFWA (Women's Fiction Writers Association) Retreat in Albuquerque, New Mexico, meeting new friends and spending time with old ones. I took a class with Lisa Cron. . . and taught one of my own--though "taught" might not be all that accurate. Mary Chris Escobar and I co-presented a hands-on workshop session on building blogs (hi!) and websites.

The whole week was craft- and life-affirming (I met my mom down in the mountains for a little girls' getaway after WFWA...it was fabulous) and I cannot wait until my ten-year plan is complete and I can have a home in the mountains! (But first, I've got to sell a lot of books--or maybe marry a billionaire.)

So to stay on track with that life-affirming high, here are my #5ForFri. I hope they bring joy to you, too (how could they not since they're all about books?!):

  1. Julia Kelly's newest historical will be out October 9th and if you haven't preordered it yet, I don't know what you're waiting for. It's stylish and sexy. The Look of Love (The Matchmaker of Edinburgh Series).
  2. And speaking of sexy, Madame de Boudoir (aka Laura von Holt) is launching the fiction part of her mer-pire (mermaid empire) in October, too. My alter-ego is building out her website and artwork for her covers, so you won't want to miss out on when she unveils them.
  3. I'm all caught up with Lindsay Emory's WOMEN WITH BOOKS podcast episodes, thanks to a week of road trippin. Super eager for more conversations with my favorite authors and new-to-me authors. Make sure you check it out while you're doing the dishes or strolling 'round the neighborhood to get in your steps.
  4. Last week while I was in New Mexico for WFWA, I got a bunch of great women's fiction book recs. I'm starting with two STAR AWARD nominees: Barbara Claypole White's ECHOES OF FAMILY and Julie Christine Johnson's IN ANOTHER LIFE. (When I publish my women's fiction novel, I suppose I'll have to add in my middle name, won't I?)
  5. There's still time to enter to win BOOKS, and a Kindle Fire, and a May Designs gift card in our #ReadWritePlan extravaganza. You didn't even have to post anything to the September Planning Challenge--there are lots of ways to enter. But hurry because it ends soon.

Destination, Love

I'm so excited to share the good news with you:

I'm re-releasing my stories from the One Week in Love anthologies as stand-alone books this fall.

You'll still be able to get all four stories together in the print versions of One Week in Wyoming and One Week in Hawaii, and in the freebie eBook of One Week in December.

But now you can grab my stories (and exclusive epilogues!!) in my new series, DESTINATION, LOVE. And the best news? ***Scroll down for SPOILER ALERT***

Make sure you're part of The A-List so you get an exclusive sneak peek of the covers and a chance to win a copy of all three eBooks AND some other goodies I can't even talk about yet because everybody loves surprises!!!

Oh, and speaking of surprises. Did September sneak up on you like it snuck up on me? There's still time to join our #ReadWritePlan extravaganza, where Lindsay Emory and I are encouraging our readers--and our author friends--to share a month's worth of organization hacks and inspo.

Follow the hashtag on Instagram and Twitter...and I think there might even be some rogue posting on Facebook. (But since FB still doesn't love me, I can't see it.) We've also got a giveaway going on. With ARCs of our Mistletoe Key books.

Okay, if you're brave enough to withstand the spoiler alert, start scrolling...

***I'm hard at work on Leo & Helene's story because everyone has been emailing me about it since One Week in Hawaii came out. (Heck, I've been emailing myself about it!)

The answer has always been "some day." WELL SOME DAY IS HERE. Kind of. The mysterious, Italian playboy and the French Prime Minister's daughter who help conspire to unite Drew and Joss in After the Fall are getting their own story! (Yeah, their love affair is going to be bananapants!)

My production schedule for 2018 is still being set in stone. But you'll be the first to know. <3
